Chapter 2391 - 2392: The Overlooked Threat
Chapter 2391 - 2392: The Overlooked Threat
What Feng Yuan and the others hadn’t expected was that after they’d walked a full round of the snack street, bought a pile of treats, and came back, that Snow Lunatic was still teasing tourists with no sign of actually starting the performance.
"If it weren’t for the posters up there, I’d think they were planning to put on a pretty lousy Snow Lunatic show."
Eyeing the Snow Lunatic performer, Feng Yuan said. The guy could mess around for so long, which actually surprised Feng Yuan quite a bit—after all, the Snow Lunatic is not an easy role. You have to act completely deranged but still keep it within bounds; if you cause accidental injuries, then things get serious.
This was also why, up on the Northern Snow Plain, Snow Lunatic performances were usually paired with Bai Xue, and the whole show never lasted more than fifteen minutes.
Besides the fact that the chasing sequence is exhausting, more importantly, the performers just can’t sustain that state for too long.
Looking at the performer in front of them, Feng Yuan figured his strength probably wasn’t weak; otherwise he wouldn’t be able to keep it up this long. Could he be from Hot Springs Town?
Feng Yuan didn’t know the answer and couldn’t be bothered to guess. Whatever the truth was had nothing to do with him.
"He’s probably a local, right? Like those folks on the Northern Snow Plain who only perform for their own homeland."
Dou Yanlan looked at the Snow Lunatic, who hadn’t changed much, and said. A gust of wind blew over, carrying snowflakes toward where the Snow Lunatic was. The crowd began to gather there, and Feng Yuan and the others had no choice but to wriggle into the line, or else once the show started, they might not be able to see clearly.
"At times like this, they should just relax the no-flying regulations."
Floating in the air, Veronia said with disdain. Many Spirit Beasts could fly with their Beastmasters, and in her view, Hot Springs Town shouldn’t be forbidding unlicensed flight at a time like this.
That way, the streets wouldn’t be jammed with so many people.
"That would absolutely cause trouble. When the crowd’s this packed, the no-flying rules absolutely cannot be lifted, okay?"
Rolling his eyes, Feng Yuan said irritably. It was only because Veronia wasn’t floating too high; otherwise the patrols would’ve already ordered her down—unless she flashed her Divine Beasts status.
But Feng Yuan didn’t think Veronia would do that. What a joke—that’d be her throwing her pride away. With how much Veronia cared about her image, she’d rather get called down and lectured than show off her Divine Beasts identity for special treatment, unless they already knew and had formally granted her that privilege ahead of time.
While Feng Yuan and Veronia were arguing over what would happen if they relaxed the no-flying rules on an occasion like this, Bai Xue slowly walked over from the distance.
At that moment, the Snow Lunatic’s performer stopped trying to sell lollipops and looked toward Bai Xue. The Snow Lunatic, who already looked insane, suddenly became even more deranged.
The snowfall suddenly intensified. Amid the swirling blizzard, the Snow Lunatic let out a strange laugh, several bombs pinched between his fingertips as he cackled wildly and tossed them into the sky.
The bombs drew graceful arcs through the air and fell into the crowd. With a series of explosions, white smoke instantly enveloped the entire district. Bai Xue roared in anger, the snow grew even heavier, but this time a gale swept through the whole street, whipping the falling snow into the air and carrying it high above, where it vanished.
When their vision cleared again, the Snow Lunatic had already closed in on Bai Xue. Explosive flashes and Ultimate Move radiance flickered non-stop as the Snow Lunatic and Bai Xue clashed at close range, giving the tourists a brilliant show.
The person playing the Snow Lunatic moved as freely as a swimming dragon, circling around Bai Xue’s massive body with ease, tossing bombs from time to time. Those bombs couldn’t hurt Bai Xue, but they did a good job messing with its vision.
A blizzard formed around Bai Xue, yet it had no effect on the Snow Lunatic at all; he just kept throwing bombs and circling around Bai Xue.
After they tangled like this for quite a while, the Snow Lunatic suddenly got caught by Bai Xue seizing an opening and took a direct hit from a massive snowball. Although he burst out of the snowball quickly, he didn’t rush back in toward Bai Xue.
At this moment, gales and blizzard winds swirled around Bai Xue as it slowly closed in on the Snow Lunatic. The latter seemed terrified of Bai Xue, retreating while frantically hurling bombs.
Bai Xue just kept advancing at that unhurried pace. The bombs fell in all sorts of fancy trajectories, but couldn’t stop it. Looking at those multicolored bombs, Feng Yuan was genuinely impressed.
In a standard performance, at this stage you’re only supposed to throw white smoke. Bombs with colorful smoke do exist, but compared to plain white, if you can’t precisely control where they land, the performance will just turn into a chaotic mess.
Unlike uniform white smoke, if colored smoke isn’t pre-designed, it just becomes a riot of color with zero aesthetic appeal.
For a Snow Lunatic performer to pull off this kind of effect, their skill would count as top-tier even on the Northern Snow Plain.
Feng Yuan and the others didn’t follow the Snow Lunatic as he retreated. Mainly, once the performance reached this stage it was basically the finale: the kind-hearted Bai Xue driving the Snow Lunatic away, followed by the celebration segment.
Sure enough, just as Feng Yuan expected, as the crowd slowly vanished from sight, a cheer rose from the distance, and a special kind of fluffy snow began drifting from the sky.
The snowflakes gathered midair into tiny Bai Xue-like figures. These uniquely shaped snow constructs would instantly dissolve the moment they touched anything.
Feng Yuan held out his hand, trying to keep one of the little Bai Xue snowflakes. Unfortunately, since this stuff was constructed from an Ultimate Move, with deliberately fragile internal structure, even for Feng Yuan it was impossible to preserve a single special snowflake without resorting to some special method like time-stop.
"Not going over to see their celebration?"
Veronia gave Feng Yuan a curious look. With the cheers echoing, the Snow Lunatic versus Bai Xue performance was officially over. What puzzled her was why Feng Yuan wasn’t going over to join the fun.
"No need. The celebration is just Bai Xue using its Ultimate Move for a show, and it’ll be super packed over there."
Sipping hot tea, Feng Yuan said. Compared to the Snow Lunatic, who’d stunned everyone, Bai Xue’s performance was much more by-the-book, so he didn’t hold out much hope for the final act.
As for whether he’d regret missing the show?
Feng Yuan felt there was nothing to regret. If he really wanted to see the performance, he could always go to the Northern Snow Plain. The Snow Lunatic and Bai Xue were a very common New Year act up there.
Seeing it here in Hot Springs Town was just a coincidence anyway.
When night fell, Feng Yuan and the others returned to their lodgings. Looking at the courtyard piled high with snow, Feng Yuan could only helplessly call the staff over to clean it up.
Back in the room, the Fluffy Fire Wolfhound lay on the rug, pawing at the Amulet hanging around its neck. The thing worked great, but it would become useless once they left Hot Springs Town.
This wasn’t intentional on the town’s part; the Amulet itself was designed this way to save on materials, using an environment-linked structure.
All the hot spring pools in Hot Springs Town were set up with special Energy that could provide extra Energy to recharge the Amulets. Once you left Hot Springs Town, the Amulet’s power would gradually be consumed with use until it failed.
The Fluffy Fire Wolfhound was a bit reluctant to part with this Amulet. With this thing, it could happily play in the water without even worrying about rain.
Veronia glanced at the Fluffy Fire Wolfhound and said to Feng Yuan,
"You’re not thinking of making it a more durable Amulet?"
"Forget it. If I really wanted to, the materials wouldn’t be easy to find. Plus, it’d have to take it off in battle—too much hassle."
Feng Yuan shook his head and rejected the idea. With Agunas and the others around, whenever needed he could just have them act to achieve the same effect, instead of going through the trouble of hunting for Amulet materials.
Gazing at the snow outside the window, Feng Yuan seemed to think of something and said,
"Say, should I invite some other people to go have fun on the Northern Snow Plain?"
"Mm-hm? That’s your call."
Veronia glanced at him and didn’t plan on offering advice. The Northern Snow Plain these days was no gentle place. There was one thing she was really curious about: whether there were Mythical Era remnants in the time tributaries.
If there were, then things would get very interesting—because as far as they currently knew, there were already Mythological Remnants who inherited the technology Feng Yuan had given them, as well as the Kashantuosi Remnants.
Neither side was easy to deal with. If they existed in the time tributaries, then they might very well become the main force opposing the Divine Beasts.
Had Agunas and the others ever considered that possibility?
A strange smile crept onto Veronia’s face.
