Chapter 11 Having money means you can do whatever you want.
"Huh?!"
Upon hearing his companion's accusation, Don Quixote first let out a strange cry, then said with a hint of resentment:
"We can't reveal the murderer so quickly, we should first..."
"Never mind," Don Quixote's tone suddenly became more invigorated, "Now that the murderer has been found..."
"We cannot stand idly by in the face of such an unjust act—"
She spoke rapidly, rattling off a long string of words, her eyes burning with intensity, as if she bore some mission to save the world:
"The legendary adventurer of the future, the kingdom's chief knight, Don Quixote, hereby issues a challenge to you!"
"Evil murderer, lay down your shovel and accept our righteous judgment!"
She gripped her sword with both hands, striking what she thought was a cool pose. Her eyes, wide open beneath her helmet, eagerly awaited Rhodes' response, her breathing quickening as she conjured up images of a thrilling "battle of justice."
As Don Quixote delivered his declaration of war, a cold, impatient voice rang out from the side.
"Enough!" the female mage interrupted, her brows furrowed. "Stop playing your damn hero game!"
"No," the little knight in silver armor declared emphatically, "Justice will never yield to evil!"
"I will surely punish this murderer and uphold the honor of adventurers!"
"Enough with the nonsense!" The exasperated female mage brandished her staff. "Take this Silence spell!"
A pale purple light emanated from the tip of the staff, instantly enveloping the incessantly chattering Don Quixote.
"&%#……"
The young knight, who had been speaking eloquently, suddenly fell silent. His mouth opened and closed repeatedly but no sound came out, and the knight's sword in his hand fell to the ground with a clatter.
She was so anxious that she stomped her feet on the spot, pointing at Rod and tugging at Milan's sleeve, jumping around her, but to no avail.
"The world is finally at peace." The female mage rubbed her temples, a look of relief on her face, before looking up at Rhodes.
Her gaze swept over the shovel in his hand, then over the three corpses in the pit, a hint of disdain flashing across her face, and her expression returned to its usual lazy demeanor.
"Don't get me wrong, we're not interested in you killing them." She leaned against a tree trunk, arms crossed, her arrogance and disdain barely concealed.
"I'm not interested in your dispute, but we've gotten lost in the forest and need a guide to take us to the nearest town to rest."
"Lord Milan, he is..."
Upon hearing this, the young priestess beside her widened her eyes, but was immediately interrupted by the female mage Milan.
"What are you afraid of with me here?" Milan waved his hand lazily. "A ranger who can take care of three bastards is more reliable than those useless trash who can't even beat goblins, and the maps they draw."
They originally wanted to find a local adventurer to be their guide, but after Milan went to the recruitment site and looked around, she felt that they were all unsuitable and that they would slow down her investigation. So she simply bought a bunch of maps and led the way herself.
Unfortunately, Milan didn't have much outdoor experience. As a researcher who spent most of her time indoors, she might be quite skilled, but when it came to orienting herself, especially with a map drawn by a group of uneducated adventurers, she was truly at her wit's end.
Under her guidance, the three of them got lost in the forest for a long time and encountered several groups of annoying monsters, which severely slowed down their progress.
After half a day of walking, Milan was exhausted and desperately wanted to find a place to rest instead of spending the night in this damned forest.
"Of course, even if he's quite strong, he's not even a mage..." Milan shook her head, then looked at Rhodes, "What do you think? He's just leading the way, he won't do anything to you."
"Why should I help you?" Rod glanced at them and asked back.
"Because I'm paying for it," Milan said confidently.
Since these adventurers are willing to fight each other for money, they have even less reason to refuse me.
Upon hearing this, Rod thought for a moment and then stated his price: "Ten dollars for pointing the way, thirty dollars for leading the way."
The local corpse collectors also offer directions to adventurers unfamiliar with the terrain in the Misty Forest for a fee, but Rhodes' price is double what it used to be.
After all, their location wasn't safe, and it was getting late, so charging a higher price was reasonable and didn't constitute disrupting the market.
Of course, most importantly, Rod didn't like her arrogant attitude.
How come a ranger is inferior to a mage?!
"Deal." Milan tossed over a money pouch.
Rod reached out and caught it, then suddenly sensed something was wrong as he weighed the money bag in his hand.
Upon opening it, they discovered that it contained not copper coins, but rather brand-new silver coins of relatively high purity.
"?"
Did she take the wrong purse?
"What?" Seeing Rod not move, Milan frowned slightly. "Isn't this money enough? Don't be too greedy."
"No," Rod shook his head, "you gave too much, I can't make change."
"Take the money if you have enough, and keep the rest as a service fee," Milan waved her hand.
Such a lavish and extravagant move left Rhodes stunned.
His combined income from John's gang and the bounty he had just received for eradicating the goblins didn't even amount to this bag of money.
Is this really the income he can earn right now?
"Stop dawdling and take us somewhere nearby to stay. It's getting dark." Milan urged him when she saw him still hesitating.
Rhodes: "...Okay."
Having money means you can do whatever you want.
Before the other party could urge him again, Rhodes quickly took out his map and began to search for nearby villages.
Upon seeing this, Milan glanced at the map in Rhodes' hand and noticed that it was different from the maps she had bought from the adventurers. She instinctively wanted to peek at its contents.
"Hmm?" The perceptive Rhodes immediately turned his head, and their eyes met.
Milan hadn't expected to be caught spying, so she snorted and turned away. "It's getting late, so take a good look at the map and lead the way."
She wasn't curious at all; why bother with the work when there were others to do it?
"There's a small village nearby; we could try our luck there," Rod replied.
He simply covered the body with soil and then walked ahead to lead the way for the three.
He walked right past a grave mound, which meant the young priestess had to carefully walk around it, stepping on the bloodless ground.
Meanwhile, Don Quixote, who was forbidden to speak, made the otherwise noisy journey much quieter.
As the sun gradually sank behind the western mountains, the light in the forest grew dimmer and dimmer. The mist rose again, carrying a chill, and the occasional roars of demons echoed around, sending shivers down one's spine.
Rhodes walked at the front, his steps steady and his pace neither too fast nor too slow, just enough for the three behind him to keep up. He would stop from time to time to check the direction and make sure he hadn't gone the wrong way.
Just as Milan's patience was about to run out, a small village came into view.
