Chapter 287: The Hunt
Chapter 287: The Hunt
Dimitris and Corey alongside a group of men set out to track the group of individuals that had been watching them with one task in mind.
That was to kill them all, Mariam couldn’t risk hostiles slipping through their ranks.
There was no doubt that this was an extreme action but extreme actions were needed to survive in this world now.
It was one where the strongest strive and the weak shall be weeded out, this was the way of the world and Mariam had embraced it.
Her people were the only ones she cared about because the nature of man was cruel.
Dimitris took Glenn alongside a few others to travel with him on this journey, he knew he needed people he trusted around him because Corey was a sociopath who would like nothing more than to live without rules.
He looked up and realized the sun had hidden like a shy virgin behind the darkened skies but only because it would rain.
Dimitris was tired of this and wished to sleep, he just wanted to sleep and forget about everything however he didn’t have this luxury.
He couldn’t sleep even if he wanted to ever since Jason’s death, he hasn’t been at ease.
There was so much he didn’t know about and he couldn’t even begin to piece things together.
The boy that had been killed for example. Did Jason save him just to kill him?
Things weren’t adding up but this wasn’t their priority, they were about to wipe out a community.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Glenn questioned but Dimitris knew if he didn’t go then there was a chance that Corey would commit crimes that would make one question if humanity was better off extinct.
"We have to keep an eye on him and if it comes to it, this might be our only chance to get rid of him," Dimitris said.
Glenn hated this but Corey’s influence in the community had grown, more people were aware of him with rumours regarding a few women being assaulted but none ever came forward despite even Mariam knowing that these weren’t false accusations.
However, Corey was a weapon that she could use and she intended to do so.
"Excuse me?" A voice said from the side of the car.
’What are you doing here?" Glenn asked, clearly confused.
"I came here to volunteer. I wish to join the expedition," The voice said, which was revealed to be that of Rachel.
"What? You should head back, we don’t know what is out there," Glenn warned her, he knew that he couldn’t stop her if she wished to come but he could try to dissuade her.
"No Glenn, we need a medic should things go south," Dimitris said.
Glenn was worried because he didn’t know if she would be able to stomach the massacre.
They weren’t going to fight zombies, they were going to execute people.
She would be safer in the community because killing the living was a lot different than killing the dead.
The trauma will remain, and the sound of their screams and cries will forever live in their heads.
There was no escaping it but Rachel wasn’t backing down, he could see it in her eyes.
She was determined.
"Fine, get in and wear your seat belt. It is going to be a bumpy ride," Glenn said reluctantly as a smile creased Rachel’s face.
She rushed inside the car as they led the way but Corey’s eyes were fixed on her.
Not her face but ass as a perverse looked crept up on his face.
-
They drove out and tracked the tyre marks left by the others, it was a surprise that they weren’t from around here because this drive took hours.
It bled into the night with the sun descending but the tyre marks were still present, these people came from afar.
And Dimitris knew that they couldn’t travel at night, they had to do so during the day hence they came to a halt.
The place was out in the open so they were susceptible to attacks but this didn’t matter as they had run a quick scan to ensure the area was secured.
Rachel partook in this exercise as she had every intention of carrying her weight.
"Stay close," Dimitris instructed his team, this wasn’t a safe space and anything could be out here.
They were no longer within their territories.
Zombies were lurking as they had run over a few already but Rachel knew that she had to earn her place among these people.
She wasn’t one of them nor was this her position so people assumed that she was looking down on the difficulty of these raids. Who could blame them?
"I’m surprised you came out here today," Glenn started the conversation, wanting to know her motive but Rachel kept quiet with a glowing stick composed of fire in hand.
Glenn’s facial expression changed as he knew why she was here, he simply wanted to engage in small talk even though this might have been a topic too heavy.
"You’re looking for him, aren’t you?" Glenn questioned, Glenn liked Jason.
There was no doubt about that but there was no explanation for Jason disappearing except he died in that attack.
"I am and I will find him, Jason isn’t dead," Rachel said with unwavering certainty, Glenn knew it wasn’t his place to shatter this hope as it did not harm.
"You know what, he is probably playing hide-and-seek," Glenn responded and Rachel couldn’t contain her laughter.
"Shush!" Dimitris immediately shut it down, they didn’t need the attention that they were bringing to them.
The darkness already put them at a massive disadvantage.
"This area is secured," Dimitris declared but out of nowhere, something dropped on him from above, knocking the light in his hand out in the process.
"DIMITRIS!" Glenn exclaimed, rushing to his position to see if he could establish visuals on Dimitris and all he saw was a zombie on him.
Glenn immediately ran his knife through its head, killing the zombie before throwing it off Dimitris.
"Are you okay!?" Glenn asked but Dimitris was motionless on the ground.
He didn’t move an inch nor was he responsive, Glenn had to shake him before Dimitris suddenly jolted forward, prompting him to stumble back.
"Got you," Dimitris said, for the first time he had attempted a joke and it had the worst comedic timing ever.
"Jesus Christ Dimitris, now isn’t the time for that," Glenn uttered but Dimitris shook his head.
He saw the state of the zombie and realized that someone had taken their life by hanging themselves on a noose.
The noose broke free because the zombie had recognized their presence and began to struggle against the frail rope it had hung itself with.
Naturally, the noose didn’t hold and that was how Dimitris found himself in this predicament.
How did they miss it? They were so focused on what might be around them that they failed to see that threats could be lurking from above.
"We should head back," Dimitris instructed to which Glenn and Rachel concurred, they knew that they couldn’t be out here for too long.
The environment was secure and they returned to their cars to call it a night.
