Chapter 220: We are about to arrive
Chapter 220: We are about to arrive
Amanda groaned softly as she stirred awake, slowly opening her eyes. Something warm rested beneath her cheek.
The realization hit her a second later.
She immediately sat up and touched the corner of her mouth.
For fuck’s sake.
She had drooled.
And not just anywhere. Right onto Kyle’s chest.
A wave of embarrassment washed over her as she hurriedly wiped her cheek. The moment her hand brushed against his chest, a familiar voice reached her ears.
"It’s fine."
Amanda froze.
Slowly, she looked up.
Kyle was smiling.
He had seen everything.
Kill her.
"Wait, you’re not going anywhere."
Chuckling, he caught her hand before she could make a desperate escape.
Amanda’s eyes instinctively drifted toward the window across the room.
Should she jump now?
She had stayed up late last night, and unlike usual, she had somehow woken up after him despite falling asleep together.
Turning back toward him, she mumbled,
"I don’t drool usually..."
"I know."
His smile only deepened.
"But honestly, watching you sleep was adorable."
Before she could protest, he pulled her onto his chest.
Amanda let out a groan.
"Don’t say things like that..."
Reaching up, she pressed a finger against his nose.
"You’re the only one who’s allowed to look cute while sleeping."
Kyle laughed and shook his head. His fingers slipped through her hair, gently combing through the tangled strands.
"Amanda..."
His voice grew a little more serious.
"When you get home today, make sure you ask your dad about the weekend."
Amanda blinked.
The conversation they had shared the previous night immediately resurfaced in her mind.
"...Have you been thinking about it?" she asked. "Are you stressed?"
Kyle released a quiet sigh.
"Stressed? Yeah. But not for the reason you’re thinking."
His hand slowly traced circles across her back.
"I just don’t want him to see me as an indecisive man who needs forever to make every decision."
Amanda shook her head.
"He won’t. And Kyle, he doesn’t even know we’ve been dating for two years."
Kyle raised an eyebrow.
"But I won’t lie to him, Amy."
There wasn’t even a hint of hesitation in his voice.
"I’m going to be honest with him because one lie turns into a hundred more."
His hand paused against her back.
"And I don’t want my relationship with your family to begin on a foundation of lies."
Amanda suddenly fell silent, prompting Kyle to glance down at her.
What he found made him pause.
She was smiling.
Not teasingly or mischievously, but with a warmth that reached her eyes. A faint blush colored her cheeks, and her gaze curved into gentle crescents as she looked up at him.
"What?" he asked.
Her expression was so infectious that he found himself smiling too.
"Nothing..."
She shook her head before nestling closer and pressing her ear against his chest.
"I’m just happy."
Kyle raised an eyebrow.
"Happy?"
"Mm."
Her arms tightened around him slightly.
"I’m happy to see you taking this so seriously."
A soft laugh escaped her.
"I already knew it, but being reminded of how committed you are to us..." Her cheeks reddened a little more. "It just makes me all giddy."
For a moment, Kyle simply looked at her.
Then he chuckled.
His hand moved to the back of her neck, gently rubbing the sensitive spot at its base.
"Sorry for making you wait."
"But not anymore."
Amanda listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her ear.
"This weekend is meant for us."
A content hum escaped her lips as she closed her eyes.
"Mm."
....
Not long afterward, a doctor arrived to perform a final checkup on Kyle.
Amanda stood quietly to the side, her brows faintly furrowed.
Yes, he was moving around just fine now, but her concern hadn’t completely faded.
After all, he had gone up against a Special-Grade criminal less than a day ago.
The doctor didn’t keep them waiting long.
"Your reports came back perfectly normal," he informed them. "Honestly, it’s remarkable how quickly you’ve recovered. There doesn’t appear to be any lasting physical trauma, so you’ll be discharged this evening."
He paused before adding,
"That said, I would still recommend consulting a psychological counselor."
Kyle nodded.
"I understand."
Then, almost as if he had been holding the question back the entire time, he immediately asked,
"What about Commander Veronica? How is she doing?"
The doctor’s expression softened slightly.
Veronica had suffered severe injuries.
Not only during the battle itself, but also from remaining inside the assailant’s Field for those crucial few moments.
Kyle had managed to heal her using the Lantern, but when Blake had last seen her the previous evening, she had still been unconscious and unable to speak.
For all he knew, she might not have regained consciousness yet.
"Ah, she’s recovering quite well. Though unlike you, her recovery rate is much slower. She’ll need to remain here for at least another three days."
The doctor’s words caused Kyle’s expression to darken slightly.
He knew it had been her duty.
He knew she had willingly stepped onto that battlefield.
Yet that knowledge did little to ease the guilt lingering in his chest.
Amanda noticed the shift in his mood and stepped closer, gently squeezing his shoulder.
Kyle reached up and placed his hand over hers before turning back to the doctor.
"Thank you for taking care of us."
The doctor offered a faint smile and nodded.
"Just doing my job."
A few moments later, he left the ward.
Though before stepping through the doorway, he cast Kyle one long, lingering glance.
Neither Kyle nor Amanda noticed the strange look.
The moment the doctor disappeared, Amanda turned her attention back to Kyle.
"Do you want something good to eat?" she asked. "The doctor said you can have anything as long as it isn’t overly spicy. Maybe some noodles?"
Kyle’s eyes practically lit up.
The mere suggestion was enough to make him hungry.
Slowly, he nodded.
"Yeah. That sounds great."
Amanda’s smile turned sheepish.
"But could you wait a little while? I need to stop by home first."
She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
"It won’t take long. On my way back, I’ll bring the best noodles from your favorite shop."
Kyle chuckled.
"That’s completely fine. Take your time."
Amanda’s smile softened.
Leaning closer, she pressed a gentle kiss to the corner of his lips before whispering,
"I’ll be right back."
Then, with one last lingering look, she headed toward the door, leaving behind a very satisfied Kyle trying and failing to hide the smile on his face.
After some moments, he lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling.
"I need to prepare gifts and a good outfit." His mind was occupied with the thoughts of this weekend, naturally.
But then, much to his annoyance, someone called him. This early morning, he felt it could be from Blake.
But much to his surprise, it was Adam.
Picking up, he snickered, "What bad habit have you developed to wake up early, my man?"
{Kyle, emergency. We are five minutes away from the hospital.}
Kyle frowned, "And who is "we"?"
{Me and my girlfriend, of course.}
"..."
